A studio landscape workshop for artists working in oils. Each morning will feature a presentation, full demo, and exercises for students focusing on value & composition. Afternoons will be devoted to one-on-one instruction. Each student's in-depth study the first afternoon will lead to a finished (or at least near-finished!) studio landscape painting by the final day. Points of study will include:

Seeing as an artist: painting light rather than objects
Planning your painting: envisioning your painting, using varied reference material, honing value and design, doing color studies
Stages of studio painting: drawing, block-in, color mixing, approaches to working a larger painting, refining texture & edges, tools for self-critique
Experimentation: exercises you can do at home to continue your growth as an artist

One-on-one instruction will be individually tailored. Students are encouraged to email several landscape painting examples beforehand and list some specific things they would like to work on.

Attendance fee includes spiral-bound workshop book plus continental breakfast and coffee each day.

Cumberland Falls in southern Kentucky is a jewel of a painting location. I joined a group of local plein air artists and came up with this piece. I hoped to capture the impression of the early morning sun on the falls just as it passed above the trees and illuminated the mist and boulders downstream.

Painted during Plein Air Glacier in June 2016. I had seen this view as an eight-year-old on my first trip to Glacier National Park, and I went back to see if it still struck me as powerfully as it did then. It did! I painted this near the Rising Sun picnic area on the Going to the Sun Road; to get to this spot, I had to ignore a lot of "Bear Frequenting" signs. (Don't worry, Mom. I kept that bear spray close at hand.)

Painted in April 2016 during the Augusta Plein Air Festival, where it won Honorable Mention. I greatly enjoyed getting to know these pigs at a farm on the Missouri River bluffs near Washington, MO.

Best of Show & First Place Oil, 2014 Augusta Plein Air Festival

I painted this on the very last day of the Augusta Plein Air Festival in Augusta, MO. I had been waiting all week for a sunrise to break through the overcast skies, and it finally happened. I scouted out a painting location using Google Maps—I knew I wanted to paint the light hitting a bend in the Missouri River.
