Carmel, CA: Painting Water on the California Coast

Join for a 3-day plein air painting workshop in beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. Space is limited to 16 students, so register soon.

Kathleen will show students how to paint water effectively en plein air. She will teach students how to observe the ocean as an artist, learning how water appears different based on the light direction and lighting conditions and the waves’ movement. She will also discuss how to use plein air and photo/video reference back in the studio so you can create compelling seascape work.

Depending on the weather forecast, the group will meet to paint each day at Point Lobos, Garrapata State Park, or Carmel Beach. Mornings will feature a full painting demonstration and students will paint in the afternoons with individualized instruction.

Feel free to reach out beforehand with any questions. The class is open to all skill levels. Kathleen will be demonstrating in oil, but the principles taught apply to other mediums if you wish to paint in gouache, pastel, acrylic or watercolor.

All students will receive a full 40+ page full color handbook for the class. We’ll also plan an optional dinner meetup one of the nights and/or an optional sunset paintout on Carmel Beach based on registered students’ preferences.

Cumberland Falls, KY: Plein Air Waterfalls

  • Kathleen B. Hudson Fine Art (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Come paint at Cumberland Falls, a beautiful and very accessible waterfall 1.5 hours south of Lexington, KY and 1.5 hours north of Knoxville, TN.

Register below soon since registration is limited to 16 students. The fee includes full tuition and workshop handbook for a 3-day plein air workshop near Corbin, KY at Cumberland Falls, from 9am-4pm on August 17, 18, and 19.

We will met each day on the viewing platform at Cumberland Falls, where there is ample parking, facilities, a restaurant and a short trail along the river to the falls.

We will gather for an optional dinner at the Riverview Restaurant on the first night. A few more intrepid students may want to join for an optional nighttime Moonbow viewing at 10:30pm on the 18th (depending on cloud cover). Cumberland Falls has the only moonbow in the Western hemisphere and if the skies are clear, it will be visible the night before the full moon on 8/19. The moonbow is visible from both the Upper Viewing Platform near the Cumberland Falls parking lot and from a spot across the river that is only accessible via an 11mi hike. If you opt to hike, you should plan ahead and bring a headlamp, hiking boots, water & snacks, etc.

LODGINg

I recommend that students book lodging at the Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, which offers everything from suites to rustic cottages and tent sites and has a restaurant onsite with a beautiful view of the river. There are hotels in nearby Corbin, KY and AirBnBs in the area as well. Please book early so that you don’t miss out on your preferred place to stay. (The moonbow is a popular phenomenon and there might also be weddings scheduled at the lodge on summer weekends.) If you opt for an AirBnB, try to pick a spot with a refundable cancellation policy just in case something comes up.

Meals

Students can pack lunches or else get a lunch at the Visitor Center. The restaurant at the Lodge does breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there are options in nearby Corbin, KY as well.

Registration

You can register via credit card online below or else mail a check. To register and pay by check, contact me via email. Credit card registrations are fully refundable less a $20 processing fee until 4/30/24, after which time they are 50% refundable until June 1. I highly recommend buying insurance for the class and any travel so you are covered in the event you need to cancel for any reason.

Glacier NP & Flathead Lake: 3 Day Plein Air Workshop

I’m thrilled to announce a 3 day plein air workshop based in Bigfork, Montana, from August 28-30. Class size will be limited to 15 students so register early. We will paint at Flathead Lake and on the Swan River for two days before going into Glacier National Park on day three for a boat tour on Lake McDonald followed by a day of painting in the park. We’ll paint at McDonald Creek and Avalanche Creek, if time permits.

You don’t have to be an experienced outdoor painter to take the course, but I do recommend you gain some familiarity with your gear before you arrive so you aren’t having to setup a new outdoor easel for the first time onsite. All levels of painters are welcome—I teach some advanced concepts, but I aim to do so in a way that’s free of jargon and understandable to painters of all levels.

Tuition includes three full days of instruction, a 40-page full color workshop handbook, and a boat tour on Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park. Accommodations are available at a discounted rate at the Timbers Motel in Bigfork, Montana (call 406-837-6200 to book). We’ll do dinners together at local restaurants after painting and I look forward to getting to know you!

I’ve timed the workshop to conclude just ahead of the opening of my solo show “FALLING WATER” on September 1 at FoR Fine Art in Whitefish—so if you’d like to stay around for the show opening, I’d love to share that work with you after three days of painting in one of the world’s most beautiful places.

Registration

Register by paying the tuition fee below to hold your place. Fee is fully refundable until July 15, 2022 and 50% refundable for cancellations after. (In the event of a student’s positive or suspected COVID-19 case immediately prior to travel, tuition is fully refundable.) Note that to enter Glacier National Park, you’ll need to either buy a day pass at the park entrance or bring your Annual or Lifetime Access Pass with you if you have one. Glacier now requires cars to have a timed entry reservation, but our boat tour will provide those to each of us free of charge.

Once you confirm your registration, please also fill out the form below so I can know more about your hopes for the workshop and tailor the instruction to suit!

Monday, October 29th - Saturday, October 31st @ The Coppini Academy of Fine Arts in San Antonio, TX

Registration link: https://thecoppini.org/workshop/18469/kathleen-b-hudson-painting-the-landscape-in-oil

A studio landscape workshop for artists working in oils. Each morning will feature a presentation, full demo, and exercises for students focusing on value & composition. Afternoons will be devoted to one-on-one instruction. Each student's in-depth study the first afternoon will lead to a finished (or at least near-finished!) studio landscape painting by the final day. Points of study will include:

  • Seeing as an artist: painting light rather than objects

  • Planning your painting: envisioning your painting, using varied reference material, honing value and design, doing color studies

  • Stages of studio painting: drawing, block-in, color mixing, approaches to working a larger painting, refining texture & edges, tools for self-critique

  • Experimentation: exercises you can do at home to continue your growth as an artist

One-on-one instruction will be individually tailored. Students are encouraged to email several landscape painting examples beforehand and list some specific things they would like to work on.

Attendance fee includes spiral-bound workshop book plus continental breakfast and coffee each day.

Cost: $375 for Academy Members/$425 for Non-members

Space is limited. Register here: https://thecoppini.org/workshop/18469/kathleen-b-hudson-painting-the-landscape-in-oil
